Inferiority and Smartphone Addiction among Korean Youth: The Mediating Effect of Trait Anxiety

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediation effect of trait anxiety on the relationship between smartphone addiction and feelings of inferiority. To this end, levels of smartphone addiction, inferiority, and trait anxiety were assessed in 278 Korean high school and university students. The Pearson product moment correlation and structural equation model (SEM) were utilized and a significant correlation between the three variables was identified. Both inferiority and trait anxiety significantly affected smartphone addiction and inferiority significantly affected trait anxiety. Additionally, trait anxiety significantly mediated the relationship between smartphone addiction and inferiority. Implications, limitations, and recommendations for utilizing these findings in counseling programs are discussed.
